Rong-Huey Liu and the Riverside County Philharmonic

January 19, 2013 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Riverside County Philharmonic

Rong-Huey Liu, Oboe

Saturday, January 19 – 7:30 p.m.

“Landscapes”

Sibelius “Finlandia”
Dvořák “Symphony #7”

The Riverside County Philharmonic has an incredible roster of extraordinary musicians.  Tonight we will feature our phenomenal principal oboist Rong-Huey Liu, performing John Corigliano’s adventurous and imaginative Oboe Concerto.  It should be little surprise that from the composer who wrote such film scores as The Red Violin and Altered States comes one of the most unique woodwind works every written.  From imitating an orchestra tuning to beautiful lyrical melodies to imitating the Moroccan Rheita (an oboe-like instrument), the Oboe Concerto will take you on an extraordinary journey, unlike anything else you have ever heard.

Also on the program will be Jean Sibelius’ famous anthem-like tone poem Finlandia and Antonin Dvořák’s most profound symphony, his Seventh, which is full of memorable tunes, exciting dances, and passionate harmonies.

Meet the Artist: Rong-Huey Liu

Hailed by her colleagues as “most expressive with a beautiful sound”, award-winning oboist Rong-Huey Liu holds the principal position in the Riverside County Philharmonic and is acting principal for Fresno Philharmonic and Reno Chamber Orchestra.  A graduate (with honors) from USC, Dr. Liu is a faculty member at La Sierra University and Riverside City College.  She has performed worldwide and recorded with David Benoit, Ron Isley, Bright Eyes and others.  As an avid recitalist, chamber musician and concerto soloist, Rong-Huey is thrilled to perform one of the most difficult oboe concertos – Corigliano’s Concerto for Oboe and Orchestra.
